A Squirrel’s Eye View: Blown Away

It’s a blustery one out there, I’m trying not to get blown away!

It’s a blustery one out there, I’m trying not to get blown away!

I took this picture on my way up a birch tree, in January, in Wisconsin! Look at that, not a lick of snow on the tree. It was quite warm out and I didn’t know what to think. My tree calendar said that it was January, so I had to believe it. I don’t have to look at my calendar anymore, I know it’s winter. It is snowy and cold and windy. In fact, it was so cold that I invited a few of my squirrel friends over to my drey. I only like to cuddle out of necessity! Once it warms up, I’ll kick them out. I really do like living alone!

As I squirrel I’m pretty fond of trees. In fact, I love trees! Not only do I live in trees and play in trees, I eat trees. Why would I eat my home and my playground? Because I don’t have a toothbrush! I chew on tree branches to clean my teeth. Chewing on branches also sharpens my teeth. Clean, sharp teeth are very important to squirrels. Just look at all of those branches to chew up there, I better get busy!

It snowed! It snowed! It snowed! You might be surprised that I am excited about this, being a squirrel and all. But I love the snow, it is so much fun to play in! Do you want to know another secret? I also love the salt. Us squirrels need some salt in our diet and when it snows you humans put salt on the roads. I find that salt in the dirt and snow and ice on the side of the road and eat it. It’s delicious and I wait all summer for this special treat!

I don’t like to go out at night so I was trying to get back to my drey before nightfall. As I was running across the top of a railing, taking a short-cut you know, I looked back and caught a glimpse of the moon at sunset. Sorry about the wonky angle, but it’s difficult for a squirrel to take a picture while running to beat nightfall. I’m sure you understand!

I’m on my way home! I live in a nest called a drey that is made of twigs with the leaves still attached. Do you see it in the top of my tree? It is about the size of a football, maybe a little bigger. I built it way up high and lined it with dry grass, shredded bark, moss and feathers. This is my summer drey, in the winter I will make a new nest in a hollow tree trunk. I’ll let you in on a little secret…this is not my only home! I have dreys in all of my favorite places.

I live near this secret staircase in Irvine Park in Chippewa Falls, WI. I’m pretty lucky to live in such a beautiful place! You should come visit me while the leaves are crunchy under our feet. We can play in them together!
The wait is over! I am happy to introduce Glory Displayed’s new blog entitled “A Squirrel’s Eye View.” This blog is a long time in coming. I have thought about it and schemed silly and creative shots for months. One of the things that sets Glory Displayed apart is the unique perspectives that I try to capture in many of my photographs. I enjoy this so much that I decided to devote an entire blog to photographs taken from the point of view of a squirrel. I have gotten myself into all sorts of interesting predicaments while pretending I was a squirrel! Many of the photographs will be of trees. One, I love trees. Two, there is an endless supply of fun trees to climb and photograph. Three, squirrels love trees! Squirrels see all sorts of interesting things and through this blog you will see the world as they see it! As I have been researching squirrels I have learned many interesting things that I will pass along to you. So sit back and enjoy the first photograph from A Squirrel’s Eye View…

“I love going out on a limb! Did you know that I have a wide field of vision?”
Thank you so much for visiting my blog. I am working on a really fun project that will be revealed soon. Make sure you “Like” Glory Displayed on Facebook and be the first to know when the blog is launched!
